Title: A National Priority: Optimizing The Role of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Clinicians in Tobacco Cessation Services

The context of this presentation will provide an overview of tobacco cessation from a CDC national healthcare outreach initiative to evidence based tobacco cessation clinical practices. This presentation will highlight the aims of the CDC Office of Smoking and Health initiative “2019-The Year of Cessation” to prominently feature its cessation work as an integral part of its tobacco prevention and control portfolio.  Further exploration will be presented specifically for CR and PR clinicians to optimize tobacco cessation strategies among the cardiopulmonary population with an alignment with the aims of  “The Year of Cessation” campaign.

Learning Objectives

1-Discuss the aims of the CDC Office of Smoking and Health‘s “2019- The Year of Cessation” initiatives.
2-Describe the relationship between cigarette smoke and inflammation
3-Summarize the tobacco cessation evidence based medication therapy and brief counseling interventions. 
4-Explore approaches for CR and PR clinicians to optimize tobacco cessation strategies among the cardiopulmonary population and the opportunity to align with the aims of “ 2019- The Year of Cessation” campaign.
